Rhodri has broken three toes on his right foot. I knew there would be an accident sooner or later when Grumbo started this craze for wheelchair races! Round the corner he and Tingle went, and poor Rhodri hadn’t a second to flatten himself into the wall before they had gone straight over his feet. Fortunately the left one is only heavily bruised, but the poor boy was in terrible pain. These things are no joke, even when you’re 195. We have made the punishment fit the crime though - Nick decreed that as Rhodri couldn’t walk, he should have the pick of the wheelchairs and all the rest were to be stored behind the reindeer stables. I took the precaution of putting a padlock on the door, and I am holding the key myself – I’m afraid I can’t trust Nick not to give way and join in when my back is turned. – Not that it will prevent them getting up to something else, but it’s a brief respite. I caught Tingle helping himself to my hairpins yesterday, but happily I think he is now too longsighted to pick the lock, and he is certainly much too vain to wear his glasses. Grumbo, bless him, thinks his make him look mature and sophisticated! I shan’t be disillusioning him – he’s too clumsy for lock picking.
I am looking forward to the visit from Alice who is coming over to us from the New Zealand Training School on a secondment. I heard from Percy that she was a dab hand at keeping Tingle in order – she sounds like just what we need. What they would all really benefit from is more work to keep them busy, but this is always a slow time of year before the letters start coming in. Perhaps Alice will have some good ideas.
